Almost the gestation of a baby

I started this quilt 8 months ago in September. Progress was very slow with mysterious blocks going missing and much unpicking. Even photographing it has been problematic. As always I am quite attached. I know the colours are strong but I like it. The backing cloth is one of my favourite flannels. I will be taking it to a craft market this Saturday and I might sell it, but only if I like the person!

Often I like a quilt much more when it's still in pieces. One spends quite a long time accumulating patches and I get used to the proportions of the fabric and colours in this state. The final pulling together is comparatively quick, shapes inevitably diminish and contract. The change feels sudden. It takes a while for me to get used to the new pattern. Also I need to adjust to the thick and textured surface. No longer the flat, cool and floppy segments. Holding onto the past too much.

this is very interesting. the scraps do take on such a different life after they are attached. i often notice that they seem so different. this can make me feel sad and glad at the same time. i have stopped using batting, i like the look of the fabrics as a very skinny sandwich that adds weight but not fluff.

This is the first time I've used "proper" batting. All the quilts that influenced me as a child had that "skinny Sandwich" as you put it so well Jude. Some of them were just 3 layers of cloth and no quilting.
And Mary, I know what you mean, even if I did have to read your comment 2 times to understand it!
