Portuguese Antiquities

I love old packaging; the shapes of the letters, the muted colours/dyes, the texture of the paper. And I love looking for these old domestic goods in Portuguese musty shops. Here in Britain I've never found them. Perhaps I don't know how to look here. English treasure hunting would be at Charity (thrift) Shops or Car Boot Sales. But domestic ephemera rarely makes it. These are products to be used and the wrapping thrown away. They weren't destined to be cherished. Some products are almost obsolete. Who uses powdered soap for shaving these days?
I think that because the majority of industrialisation in Portugal happened post-revolution, 1974, which isn't that long ago, because many shop rents are fixed way below the market rate, because the generation that kept the establishment in the 50's and 60's is still just alive, that these shops are still open. And in the stock room, on the top shelf, stuffed in a drawer, under the counter, behind that cabinet....there are treasures.
Powdered Soap made by historic Portuguese company Claus & Schweder, Succrs:

Hot wash dyes, with the sample sheet of colours from the brand "Raposa" - Fox:

More shaving soap, this one from Confiança and leather paint Coureina.

These toothpicks have been printed especially for this grocers store, though they look old they must have been printed about 10 years ago, as they state that you can pay for your goods with "multibanco" - credit/debit cards - but the telephone code is one from the 90's. The print has "relief" so an old printing press must have been used:

Many current goods (toothpaste, baking powder, flours, floor wax etc) are still produced with their original graphics:

Somehow with distance and the eye of my life and times, these domestic perishables are precious shells from another era, that remind me of how life was lived and how life has changed. And I find them beautiful.
